Artist’s Statement

I am a full-time studio artist, creating both functional and decorative lathe-turned and carved wood vessels and sculptural objects. Much of the material for these vessels and objects is harvested from my immediate environment – the woodlands surrounding my rural Minnesota studio.

My work focuses on function or implied function, acknowledging the history of the vessel. I frequently work with green wood. As it dries, the form changes and wonderful textures develop. This would be impossible to achieve with dry wood. I am challenged by creating wood forms that involve craftsmanship of chance rather than craftsmanship of certainty.

The wood vessel becomes a vehicle through which I attempt to connect with my own human experience. My work is drawn from my personal experience and value system and I strive for continuity, historical context and a high level of workmanship.

Care of the wood vessel

To care for your decorative wood vase or jar, simply dust with a soft cloth. To clean  functional pieces, such as salad and storage bowls, wipe them with a damp cloth and mild soap solution. Dry thoroughly and rub with a soft cloth. Store all wood items out of direct sunlight.
