From Kari Vick:

Original Etching with Aquatint.
Paper size: 9 x 7 inches.

Solar Plate Etching is a very green art process.  It was invented in the 1970\'s by master printmaker, Dan Weldon.

A solar plate is a light sensitized steel-backed polymer material.  It does not use grounds, acids, or solvents as in traditional etching, but which are toxic.  The plate is exposed with UV light (the sun or a light box) and developed with ordinary tap water.  The artist makes a drawing on transparent material (I use tracing paper). Because the process is right reading, there is no need to draw in reverse, as with traditional etching processes. First, I place an aquatint screen onto the light box, and put the plate on top of it.  I then expose the plate for a few seconds.  This creates a fine dot pattern texture.  Next, I place the drawing onto the light box and place the solar plate on top of it again and expose it again.  The lines of the artwork block the UV rays, and the polymer below those lines stays soft.  In turn, the light hardens the polymer that is not blocked by the artwork.  Then the plate is put into water, and the still-soft polymer is washed away, creating a relief plate, which is then inked, painstakingly wiped, and printed on an etching press.  The plate is re-inked and wiped for each successive print, so no two are exactly alike, thus the term original print, which has always sounded like an oxymoron to me.   - Kari
