THE MONARCH RESCUE – DEC. 9, 1906

After crossing from Port Arthur in blizzard conditions the 240 foot ship slammed into Blakes Point on Isle Royale Dec 6. The 44 passengers and crew survived 3 days on shore before the lighthouse keeper in a small rowboat from Passage Island found them. Along with the Monarchs purser, they left Blakes Point to arrange the rescue with the tugs James Whalen and Laura Grace from Port Arthur on Dec. 10, 1906.
