JIM BRANDENBURG Ely, Minnesota Minnesota photographer Jim Brandenburg began his career as a natural history photographer and filmmaker while majoring in studio art at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. He went on to become Picture Editor at the Worthington Daily Globe in southern Minnesota. While at the Daily Globe, Brandenburg began his career with the National Geographic Society.
Brandenburg has worked as a photographer with National Geographic for over 20 years resulting in 18 magazine stories, several television features and more than 19 books. His latest National Geographic feature "North Woods Journal" was, according to Editor William Allen, "the most photographs the magazine has ever published in one feature in its entire history and, by the way, using the least amount of film." The best seller CHASED BY THE LIGHT elaborates on Brandenburg's experiences during the 90-day project.
Brandenburg's photographs have won a multitude of national and international awards including "Kodak Wildlife Photographer of the Year" by the Natural History Museum-London and BBC Wildlife Magazine and twice being named "Magazine Photographer of the Year" by the National Press Photographer's Association (NPPA).
In 1991, Brandenburg was the recipient of the World Achievement Award from the United Nations for his work in using photography to raise public awareness for the environment.
Brandenburg has done assignment work and has been published in hundreds of books and publications including The New York Times, Life, Audubon, Smithsonian, Natural History, National Geographic World, Geo, Modern Maturity, BBC Wildlife, National Wildlife, and Outside. His work has been featured on all the major television networks including ABC's Prime Time Live and CBS "Sunday Morning" with Charles Kuralt.
Brandenburg has published many best-sellers, including: CHASED BY THE LIGHT - a 90-Day Journey; BROTHER WOLF - A Forgotten Promise; WHITE WOLF - Living with an Arctic Legend; MINNESOTA - IMAGES OF HOME, as well as four children's books: TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD -Adventures with Arctic Wolves; SAND AND FOG -dventures in Southern Africa; AMERICAN SAFARI -Adventures on the North American Prairie; and SCRUFFY -A Wolf Finds His Place in the Pack.
Jim Brandenburg is currently working on several new books and high definition television specials.
