NANCY HEMSTAD SEATON Grand Marais, MN As a transplant from the Twin Cities, I have found my niche on the Gunflint Trail; my creative urges are fueled here. Wildflowers and the atmosphere in the places that they grow are common subjects. The feeling of tranquility in the woodland setting and the fragile beauty of the plants is what I try to capture. The burst of bloom in the warmer months inspires me throughout the year. My paintings are a reflection of the joy I find while exploring the woods and the intimate spaces within them, discovering the colorful treasures in flowers.
I began exploring my technique of watercolors on vellum paper while a student at St. Olaf College. Originally, it was an attempt to pursue the transparent qualities found in blown glass, a medium I was working with at the time. I am able to paint on both sides of the vellum and in some works I use two sheets layered. This creates the unique spatial characteristics. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity cause the sheets to wrinkle and move, changing the images slightly and giving the paintings animation.
