"I have a passion for photography. It has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid I used my allowances for film and chemistry. I spent my hours in a darkened bathroom processing and printing. Things haven't really changed since then except now I process my images in a computer instead of in a sink.
My favorite subject for photography is nature. Especially here on the north shore where I've been photographing the boreal forests, rivers, and Lake Superior for more than 20 years. I don't rearrange nature. I photograph everything as I find it and I have sort of an unspoken agreement with nature. When I'm out in the wilderness I don't mess with her, and she doesn't try to kill me. So Far, it's worked out quite well.
Currently, I'm using both digital capture and film for my images. I use whatever is appropriate for the image and for the conditions in which I find myself. If it's a calm day with little of no wind, and the light is not changing too quickly, I usually bring my 4x5 film camera with me. When the weather is harsh or changing rapidly, or I just can't carry 40lbs of film equipment where I'm headed, I take the digital equipment.
All of my images, digital and film, are processed in Adobe Photoshop. I use this program to overcome the limitations inherent in both film and digital capture so that I can make prints which resemble as closely as possible the intimate landscapes that I have experienced. I wish to show the viewer what it feels like to be here on the north shore."
