Kevin and Shawn Gadomski live in
Minnesota on a small lake in an earth sheltered home they built themselves. Kevin is originally from the east coast and met Shawn at college where he majored in Art and minored in Philosophy. Shawn majored in SocioPolitical Environmental Studies with Native American emphasis. She is originally from
Minnesota and her Native heritage is from the Turtle Clan from the Grand Portage Indian Reservation. She is part Ojibway. They have two children, Tanner, 14 and Emma, 9 who are both having a great time growing up in the woods and learning art from their mom and dad.
Kevin and Shawn started Native Art 14 years ago as a collaborative effort. Their Little Manitou animals have been sold all over the world.
Kevin makes the animal heads by hand carving bass wood. The antlers are carved out of butternut wood. He then hand paints them with oil paint. Shawn dresses the animals with leather and fur. She then hand paints the collars and pouches with acrylics. The items the animals hold are a joint effort of both Kevin and Shawn, all of which are hand made by them.
The animals each represent an idea of their Native Lore which has been thoroughly researched by the couple. Many animals have a very significant totem which is shown in the designs used on the clothing and by the items they are carrying.
All of the Little Manitou are numbered as part of a series of 100. They are also signed and dated by the artists. It is their hope to bring some beauty and knowledge of the Native American Culture to those that purchase their artwork.
