Nick Wroblewski's Work

Nick Wroblewski
Minneapolis, Minnesota

Nick Wroblewski is a Minnesota based printmaker specializing in hand cut wood block prints. He studied art at Bennington College in Vermont and later taught himself the technique of relief printmaking. Majoring in painting and sculpture, Nick combined elements of the two and found himself deeply intrigued by the many possibilities within printmaking. He has been busy creating new images with woodblocks since 1996.

Nick’s has had varied art experiences including traveling with a touring circus as a child, interning with Jim Henson Productions and working with Swallows and Amazons, a jungle tour company in Brazil.  He now uses his many experiences as his main inspiration, always gathering information and subject matter for his prints. Most recently in 2002, Nick spent the winter in The Northwest Territories of Canada, producing many woodcuts of the landscape and its inhabitants. His work is usually derived from the natural world and he is deeply committed to the continual exploration and development of his artistic growth.

Currently, Nick has established a studio in his home in Minneapolis. He makes a living by creating woodcuts. His work can be seen in magazine illustrations, galleries, and art shows. He shows work at galleries in Minnesota, Vermont, and Wisconsin and displays prints at art shows throughout the Midwest.

 Artist Statement

“This work represents my interest in reductive woodblock printmaking.  The images present a dialogue between elements of design, carved surfaces and printing techniques that investigate the vitality and connectedness of the natural world."

It is my intent to portrait the “spirit” of the animals and plants that I make prints of. From the design and printing choices I make, I attempt to breathe a sense of life into the images.  It is the overlapping of individual colors and textured designs that I hope ultimately contribute to create a sense of the whole.

Woodblock printmaking is an intrinsically organic process that lends itself to imagery inspired by the intricacies of nature.”
