MONICA HANSMEYER
Seven Sister Designs
Turtle River, Minnesota
Artist Statement
I create jewelry and the name of my jewelry is Seven Sister Designs. This title has truth to it as I am the youngest sister of seven. Quite a happening for this day and age, and I feel fortunate for this rare sized family. After enrolling in a jewelry class at the University of Wisconsin Stout, I knew This was it! Nine years later, after three colleges and travel adventures to many interesting places, I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Bemidji State University.
I live in Turtle River, a quiet, beautiful spot in northern Minnesota. My jewelry studio is set up in my home, where I share my time between creating jewelry and the outdoors. I work hard and make time for play; this balance is important to keep my mind fresh and open to create. My jewelry is definitely influenced by nature. I use natural textures and patterns to accent the metal. Natural stones that have a landscape feel are often the centerpieces of my creations. I am always looking for and teaching myself new methods and techniques. It is important to stay informed about new breakthroughs as well as learn the age-old techniques.
I create all of my jewelry designs and handcraft each piece with the assistance of a apprentice during the busy season. I choose to fabricate from metal more than use the casting process. Patterns and designs are etched into sterling silver and then cut into a variety of shapes. One of a kind pieces are often designed around naturally formed stones, celebrating how magnificent the earth’s creations can be. I love to see the entire piece form right before my eyes. Jewelry intrigues me. I love the combination of age-old techniques, expression and adornment. Jewelry plays an important role in peoples’ lives by helping them celebrate certain accomplishments and occasions with something beautiful that will hopefully last a lifetime and be handed down from generation to generation. I feel very fortunate to be part of this!
